THIRD GRADE INFORMATION:
Supplies needed: pencils, crayons, white glue, scissors, ruler, eraser, 2 notebooks, 2 folders, kleenex, markers, colored pencils, black sharpie marker, composition book, disinfecting wipes, red ink pen
Arrival at school: All third graders upon arrival at school should report to the gym. At 8:20 students can enter the classroom. Classes begin at 8:30.
P. E. and Music will be on a rotational basis, alternating every other day.
Homework: Third grade homework consists mainly of studying for spelling, reading, math, social studies, and science tests. Spelling and reading tests are weekly. Math, SS, and science tests will vary, depending on how quickly we get through the chapters.
Any daily assignments not completed during the school day will be sent home for homework as well. Students are provided with plenty of class time to complete assignments, so they should rarely have to bring daily work home. Work completed at home is due the next school day by 8:30 a.m.
Going over skills taught on any graded paper is helpful and appreciated. Students are also encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes practicing math facts, spelling words, and/or reading books at home each night. Once we get AR (Accelerated Reading) levels figured out, we will focus our independent reading time (both in school and at home) on AR books. More information will be provided at a later date on AR expectations.
Excuses: Please call the school by 9:00 when your child will be absent.
Grading: On papers and the report card we are required to use letter grades. All grading is based on the following percentage scale:
A+ 100% Superior work
A 97-99% Excellent
A- 93-96%
B+ 91-92% Above average
B 88-90% Very good
B- 85-87%
C+ 83-84% Average
C 80-82% Good
C- 77-79%
D+ 74-76%
D 72-73% Needs improvement
D- 70-71%
F 0-69% Unacceptable, failing
Food Treats: Any birthday treats your child may wish to bring are fine and will be distributed in the room. Treats other times are welcome too.
Room Rules: Students will:
1. Listen carefully.
2. Follow directions.
3. Work quietly. Do not disturb others.
4. Respect others.
5. Respect school property.
6. Work and play safely.
**Infractions may warrant a “time out” during recess, a phone call to the parent, or principal involvement.
Lunch: All students are required to eat school lunch or a sack lunch unless prior written permission is given from parents. Students who eat elsewhere must be picked up by an adult, as stated in a parental note or phone call to the school. Lunch guidelines are also covered in the Miller Elementary Handbook.
